Laurus

 What do I think of "Laurus" by Eugene Vodolazkin? I don't know what to thing. "Laurus" is a translation from a Russian novel. The setting is sixteenth century Russian. Laurus goes through four name changes but I won't confuse you; I'll just call him Laurus. His parents die from the plague. His grandfather raises him, physically and spiritually. His grandfather is a healer and teaches Laurus. When the grandfather dies, Laurus carries on healing people. Laurus falls in love but his beloved dies giving birth to a stillborn son.

Laurus travels healing those he comes across. His fame as a healer is well known. Laurus prays as he journeys until he settles in one town. He lets his physical appearance go because he's a mendicant. A man named Ambrose, who has heard of Laurus convinces him to accompany him to the Holy Land.
The journey is very hard and Ambrose dies before reaching Jerusalem. The details on life in the Holy Land are scarce but Laurus goes back home to Russia.
He will eventually settle in a monastery as a monk and hermit. He will die as a revered recluse.
