Expectations

A few weeks ago, a "cloistered brother" asked what do you expect to happen, when you pray?  This book, Thirsting for Prayer by Jacques Philippe, has the answer.  It's a small book, only 152 pages.  It is divided into four parts.  They all address how to pray.  The introduction, however, answers my brother's question.

When we pray, we expect our prayer to yield fruit.  The problem is, we want the kind of fruit we want.  If we are serious about prayer, we will encounter a relationship with God.  Our conversation will yield answers.  At the least, the supplicant will feel the strength and peace they need for their lives to bear fruit, as God desires, and they will understand that.

I did a lot of underlining in this book.  It contains some gems.

In prayer the soul is purified from sin, charity is nurtured, faith takes root, hope is strengthened,
the spirit gladdened.  In prayer the soul melts into tenderness, the heart is purified, the truth reveals
itself, temptation is overcome, sadness is put to flight.  In prayer, the senses are renewed, lukewarmness vanishes, failing virtue is reinvigorated, the rust of vices is scoured away; and in the exchange,
there come forth living sparks, blazing desires of heaven, in which the flame of divine love burns.

That's what we expect to happen!

Conversing

Remember a few posts ago, my "cloistered brother," Gordon, asked a question that has been on my mind, ever since.  "When you pray, what do you expect to happen?"

Today, I realized that prayer is a conversation between God and myself, which means that I don't expect anything to happen, no more than I would expect something to happen in any conversation.

What a dummy I am!  Most of the time, I'm not asking God for anything.  I am talking (praying) to Him.

Nghia Vy's Deportation

Nghia Vy is a former "cloistered brother" and has been free for 17 years.  During that time, he went to school to be a dog groomer and also worked for Sister Ruth in the Hope Chest.  That is, until he got a letter from ICE.  The following poem speaks what happened.

Nghia Vy's Deportation

Time stays the same
       as usual--always.
Nghia helping customers
       find their treasures
Nghia who trained our dogs
       to sit and stay.

Nghia who prayed rosaries
      for all--far and near
Nghia who said "blessed,"
      instead of "happy"
Nghia who spread love,
     not hate and fear.

Nghia who paid taxes
     and obeyed laws.
Then came the letter from ICE
    to appear for a hearing.
Fear took over our thoughts
    suddenly--abruptly.

Passed from state to state,
     from prison to prison.
Nghia was stolen away.
     Unfair!  A good man!
Guantanamo, Panama, Yemen:
     deportation somewhere.

Vietnam the final destination.
     Due process be damned!
Last week we learned
     Nghia is dead.

Playing Ball

There was a video on Facebook of a dog on a balcony, on the second floor.  He would drop a ball, and sometimes people would pick it up and throw it back to him.  He'd drop it again and it was thrown back.  Facebook

Would you throw it back?  Are you the type of person to play with a dog?

Maybe I would.  It depended upon whether or not I was focused in conversation with someone.  Maybe I wouldn't notice a ball dropping down, unless it hit me on the head.

This got me thinking of the many times, playing with a ball involved others.  When my family lived in the city, we lived across the street from a school.  A couple of times the school's playground ball landed in my neighbor's yard.  You know; one of the big red balls.  When the neighbor came home from work, he picked it up and kept it.  Eventually, he gave it to my kids.  I don't know why he didn't throw it back.  Maybe he was waiting for the school kids to come ask him for it.  Maybe the kids weren't allowed to cross the street.  Anyway, we ended up with the ball.

Another time, I was visiting a "cloistered brother," in the Trenton, New Jersey prison.  I heard stories that once in a while a ball would come sailing over the wall and an inmate would throw it back over the wall.  A game of catch was played.

Lastly, is where I currently live.  When we first moved here, the neighbor behind us had one of those tall stockade fences. When the kids played wiffle ball, once in a while the ball would be hit hard and went over the neighbor's fence.  He kept the ball!  We even heard him yell, "What! Are you doing it on purpose???!!"

Actually, the kids called his fence, The Green Monster.

Hasta Luego, Jorge.

It is the worst.  One of my "cloistered brothers" has died.  It is shocking.  People talked to him hours before he died.  He did have a little stroke a few weeks ago and was on medicine.

It's so sad.  He was fairly young and looking forward to this being his last Thanksgiving and Christmas, inside.  We were all grief stricken.

We had Mass today, which was called our Thanksgiving Mass.  Of course, Mass is a Thanksgiving, anyway, so we added prayers for Jorge.

It will take us a while to process this tragedy.

Everything's a First

Paul Robinson was released from prison, after 52 years!  Here's a write up on him. Project Innocence proved him innocent.  What's even more interesting is that he doesn't hold any bitterness.  He says, "What good would it do?"

He's living in the moment and lovin' it!

Sentenced to Die

One of my "cloistered brothers" said something in chapter, today, that really impressed me.  We were sitting in a circle with our Dominican Sisters and Father Wayne, expressing what our community meant to us.  Boo Boo said that he was sentenced to die in prison.  He was a miserable person and didn't care about anything.

Slowly, he got involved with the Catholic activities in the prison.  He started to look forward to going to Mass.  However, it was when he got involved with Our Lady of Mercy Fraternity, that his attitude was completely changed.  He said he looks forward to living.  He thanks God every day for his life.  He's had so many blessings.

Cry of a Baby

One of my "cloistered brothers" has been released.  He told me that he went to Mass on Sunday and he doesn't know why, but he heard a baby crying.  He also started to cry.

He hadn't heard the cry of a baby in fourteen years.

It's the simple things that make up a life and that's what we miss when they're taken away.

Systemic Hatred

My "cloistered brother" was relating his experience at his appearance in court, for an appeal.  The attorney for prosecution actually said,

He has been a model inmate for as long as he has been incarcerated.  He has attended programs and even initiated new programs.  What a manipulative, evil genius!!!!!!

So when you do your best--you're manipulative?

Some people are just "haters."  They look at others with suspicion/hate.  Some people are biased for reasons no one can explain.  Unfortunately, when they work in law enforcement, it affects people.

Maybe, everyone needs mental health counseling to find out if they're suited for their jobs.

Anyway, please pray that my "cloistered brother" gets his appeal approved.

The Journey to Jerusalem

Guest post by Mr. Agustin Garcia, OP.

Christ invites us to journey with Him, "going up to Jerusalem." The way to Jerusalem is through wholeheartedly embracing God's call to obedience, through prayer, fasting, and acts of mercy.

The apostles didn't understand what being a disciple entailed.  James and John must have thought "going up to Jerusalem" meant going to claim the Messiah's throne.  Their mother asked Jesus to have them sit next to Him when He came to His kingdom (Matt. 20: 24).

Journeying toward the heavenly kingdom impels us to share Jesus' fate.  Every one of the apostles will carry a specific cross.  All the apostles die an ignoble death

Are you ready for the journey?  What is your cross?  Can you follow Jesus all the way up to Jerusalem?

God's Will

Is optimism just wishful thinking?  Being positive about everything is a good attitude, or is it foolishness.  I once saw a poster on the wall that said, "If you think you can, and you think you can't, you're both right.

I think it's better to trust in God.  Of course, bad things will happen.  But if you rely on God to know what he's doing, then you're better off.

One of my "cloistered brothers," was once waiting to be granted his appeal.  He was denied.  But he said, "God must think I still have something to learn in prison, or someone here has something to learn from me."  This is the attitude that is best.

In the Beginning

This video is narrated by Mr. Thomas Lynes, O.P., from Our Lady of Mercy Fraternity.  Tom is a graduate from our "cloistered brothers" in Norfolk, MA.

Rasher's Christmas' Greetings

These were some things that came to my mind when I observed some of the reactions since getting slammed by the corona virus:

Souls walking inside a shell
souls talking about heaven and hell
some with the fear of God, others praising devils

no fear at all.

All types of worshiping to saints and sinners,
souls asking souls "which ones are the winners"?
And then came covid upon all the souls,
things got quiet behind the walls.

Those souls who love zombies got to see them
first hand, but not on TV ,
you see, these were their friends.
They were sick, they were frail,
some couldn't breathe, now all of a sudden,
 people offered God's speed.

Souls who went out from behind the wall,
never came back for the count time call.
Some loved Jesus others loved the devil
others care less about hell or heaven.
No doubt there was fear in all these souls,
especially for those whose shells went cold.

 Souls alive inside a shell.
Shells been ravaged by a virus
 that doesn't know identity.
Gasping for breath, fighting for life,
no taste no smell, now wondering,
about heaven and hell? The questions,
the fear, some pretending they don't care.

Souls walking inside a shell,
not prepared for where this will end.
I choose Christ and his Blessed mother
and the communion of saints
who know me like no other

I guess it doesn't matter how we feel the
Lords presence coming to us,
its what we do with it now!!

Have a Peaceful and Blessed Christmas,
and here's wishing you all a Bright Healthy 2021!!!

Can you explain how a seed germinates?  I don't mean adding water and sunlight.  I mean what is inside the seed that makes it start to ...
