Catholicity

You know why I like going to shrines, rather than my parish church.  It's because of the variety of people that go there.  Last night I went to a candlelight procession to pray to Our Lady of Fatima.

In short, in Fatima, Portugal, The Blessed Mother appeared to three children on the 13th of the month, for six months.  The children never veered from their story, in spite of punishments, threats, and deprivations.  And these are young children, who one would think would obey and/or be easily frightened.

They never changed their story.

I went to a candlelight procession at a nearby shrine.  The candles were wasted because we didn't need them; there was too much daylight.  But it's the faith of the people that carried the procession.

On Sunday, you see people in church, probably because it's Sunday and they feel they're obligated.  But last night, a beautiful evening, no one would have gone to Mass, unless you wanted to go to Mass.  These people are true believers.  Plus, I heard praying in Arabic, Russian, Haitian Creole, French, Indonesian and dialects in Indonesian, Filipino, Italian, Indian, and I can't remember what else.  It brought to mind how universal the Roman Catholic Church is.  Yet, we are One.  Praise be God, the Almighty.  Amen.

A World Gone Amuck

Warren H. Carroll's "1917: Red Banners, White Mantle," was a different view of history than I was taught.  This little history concentrates on a specific time, contrasting four cataclysmic occurrences.

   * Russia collapses and totalitarianism takes over.

    *A worldwide pandemic hits.

*Europe becomes involved in a war.

*Our Lady of Fatima offers hope in Portugal.

Today, in 2020, the world is also enmeshed in natural disasters, terrorism, political dissension, and HATE.  I can't help but think Our Lord will send us another message of hope.  We can't wait for this year to end, this time to be over, and any succor Our Lady can offer.

That's how Warren Carroll depicts the people in this history.  Pope Benedict XV offered to broker peace but his plans and ideas were not accepted.  (Reminds me of Fratelli Tutti, Lumen Fidei, Evangeli Gaudium

, and everything else Pope Francis wrote.)  The world did not listen to the Vicars of Christ then, nor now, and worse,

100 Years

Last night I went to Fatima Shrine in Holliston, MA for the celebration of the 13th.  The 13th is the
date, 100 years ago, that an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared in Fatima, Portugal.  Mary appeared on the 13th of every month for about three months, except for the time the children were in jail.

The children never changed their story, even jail didn't deter their memories.

Here is a picture of Bishop Thomas Tobin from Providence, RI, diocese.  He was the Mass celebrant.  After the Mass, we processed reciting the rosary and singing and holding candles around the rosary rock formation.  It was quite impressive.

A Maternal Ambassador's Peace Plan Unveiled at the United Nations

A Maternal Ambassador's Peace Plan Unveiled at the United Nations: On May 12, at the very time Pilot, writes about the event.
Pope Francis was arriving in Portugal to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the Fatima apparitions and the canonization of Saints Francisco and Jacinta Marto, something unusual was happening at the United Nations.  Father Roger Landry, in the

This is a clear sign that they believe that Fatima has something important to say to us, regardless of our religious status, and to say to the nations of the world. It has something in particular to say about peace in this institution dedicated to preventing the scourge of war."

Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Papal Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN explained that Our Lady of Fatima has a timeless message of Peace for the world:

(1) Conversion of  minds

(2)  Conversion of hearts

(3)  Prayer is important

(4)  Everyone must work towards peace.

Archbishop Auza said at the end of his remarks that the centenary of Fatima is not principally about marking a series of events from the past, but on responding to its lessons in the present and future. "The message of peace that the shepherd children said the Lady from heaven brought, and the practices of conversion, transformation of heart, prayer and commitment she indicated," he said, "are as important today for peace in the world as they were a century ago."

Let's pray the peace plan brought by the maternal Ambassador of Peace to Fatima in 1917 echoes at the United Nations, and across the world, for many years to come.

Day Nineteen Consecration to Mary for the 21st Century/A Lenten Journey

Day Nineteen Consecration to Mary for the 21st Century/A Lenten Journey

                                                                        Day Nineteen

Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent

Prayers for this week, Days17 - 22 in Lent:

Begin each day with "Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you."
Pilgrim Statue of Fatima

First Meditation

Look at this statue.  This is a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, also.  For many years I scorned this statue because it is not the true image of Fatima, that the three children saw.  I called it a Hollywood statue full of BLING!  However, my perception was corrected by Father Joe Viveiros, pastor of St. Dominic's in Swansea MA, and a Lay Dominican, and also of Portuguese heritage.
Father Viveiros explained that  after World War II the people of Portugal were grateful for the relative peace their country had received during the war.  Most of Europe was involved in the conflict, but not Portugal, the country where Our Lady appeared.  In thanksgiving and also reparation for sin, the people of Portugal donated as a sign of their eternal gratitude, their precious gold and jewels.  The jewelry was melted down and fashioned into that humonguous crown, that I in my ignorance, disdained.  I am sorry for my ignorance.  Now, I'm in awe of the sacrifice of the Portuguese people.
More so, when I learned that Pope John Paul II visited the statue.  He took on his visit, the bullet that was intended to kill him.  He was going to place it at the feet of the statue and say a prayer of thanksgiving for God saving his life.  However, for some reason, the pope saw a perfectly round hole in the front of the crown.  He didn't know why but he put the bullet in it, and it simply just fell into place.  It was remarkably secure.  No one could pull it back out.

Second Meditation

Which statue are you more attraced to?  Reflect upon the reasons for your choice.

As Mary appeared to the three children in Fatima, Portugal

or as the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima, commissioned
by the people of Portugal in thanksgiving for peace and in
reparation for sin.

Third Meditation

Meditate upon the fact that God granted Moses request in Deuteronomy 9: 18-19, to not destroyed the people.  Read Deuteronomy Chapter 9.    Don't you think that God would more certainly respond to the prayers of the Blessed Mother, than Moses?

End your day with an examination of conscience--even in bed.
Mother of God, pray for me.
What good did I do today?
Where did I fail?
How can I do better?

Marian Day

October 13 is a special day.  On this day Our Blessed Mother Mary appeared to three little children in Fatima, Portugal.  This year, Pope Francis is going to consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, on October 13.

A notable aspect of this event will be the participation of 10 Marian Shrines around the world during the recitation of the Rosary. They include the Marian Shrines of Aparecida, Brazil; Lujan, Argentina; Lourdes, France; Czestochowa, Poland; Banneux, Belgium; Nazareth, Israel; Nairobi, Kenya; Akita, Japan; Vailankanny, India; and Washington, D.C.

It is actually a two day event.  On the thirteenth, itself, the pope will consecrate the world to Mary.  Pope Pius XII was the first to consecrate.  He consecrated Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  I remember as a child praying for the conversion of Russia.  And look.  It worked.  Let us now pray for the conversion of the world.

The one thing that irks me is the statue of Fatima, itself.  The media calls it the original statue from Fatima.  It's not the original.  It's the statue that the Bishop of Leira had made to travel the world. It's not the original vision of Mary at Fatima.  It's not Mary that the three children saw.  It's not the Mary that Sister Lucia supervised the sculpting.  See my blog post about the original statue.  http://theonetruefaith-faith.blogspot.com/2010/07/statue-of-our-lady-of-fatima.html

If people just think for a minute.  Do you really think Mary would wear a showy, glamorous, oversized crown like that statue portrays?

Besides, the visionaries talk about Mary's heart worn on the outside of her clothing.  Immaculate heart--heart, get it?

Why is the Pope venerating a Holywood "knock-off" statue as the Immaculate Heart of Mary, when there's no heart exposed on this statue?

The statue the Pope is venerating is the International Traveling Statue of Our Lady of Fatima.  It travels the world spreading devotion to Mary.  It is recognized world-wide as Our Lady of Fatima.

I don't understand why the true statue couldn't be used.  It's the authentic vision, as the three children saw it.

I guess people prefer "gaudy bling."

The Blessed Mother's Chakra Energy

Looking at the differences between the authentic Fatima Statue and the "Hollywood" traveling one, I noticed something interesting. Our Blessed Mother is gathering the "good energy" from heaven, in one hand, and sending the "bad energy" back into the earth.

What??? It's part of Tai Chi, and Yoga, and Prana, etc. IOW, it's a common stance to receive the good and get rid of the bad. I'm talking about energy, or chakra.

I'm not saying what this means. But it's interesting.

Other differences between the statue that Sr. Lucia directed and the showy one, directed by the Bishop of Fatima are:

One is simple----- one is dressed for a "Hollywood" gala
One is veiled----- one wears a humongous crown
One's dress is simple----- one has a lot of "bling"
One's heart is outside----- one doesn't depict a heart
One's hands are in chakra position----- one's hands are folded in prayer

One thing to keep in mind. It's ONLY a statue. Catholics don't worship statues. Catholics honor Mary. Whichever statue turns you on, then let it give you inspiration to venerate the Mother of God.

Our Lady of Fatima came to Visit Us

The traveling Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima came to my parish, tonight.  As I've said before, Our Lady wasn't dressed so flashy, "a la Las Vegas."  This is the traveling statue.  Mary's traveling clothes.  Like all us, when we go out, we get dressed up.

Sr. Lucia gave the sculptor, Fr. Thomas McGlynn, OP directions on what Our Lady looked like.  Her heart was on the outside, and she was dressed very simply.  But this statue is the Pilgrim traveling statue.  The Pope crowned this statue to honor Mary, and a Bishop in Portugal dressed her up to travel around the world giving the message to pray for peace in the world and in the family.

With the permission of Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the World Apostolate of Fatima is traveling the diocese of Boston.  This Statue travels throughout the diocese of the United States.  The Statue was blessed by Pope Paul VI in 1967 and given as a gift to the U.S. by the Bishop of Fatima, under the care of the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA.

It is the hope of the Apostolate that more men, women and children will have the opportunity to learn more about the Message of Fatima, gather to pray for peace in the world and in the family, and give honor to Our Lady.  May many prayers be offered this October for these intentions, and may Our Blessed Mother continue to intercede for us, especially the Archdiocese of Boston, and the parish of St. Mary's Franklin.

Human Dignity
