Wine Tasting

St. Mary's Women's Club had a wine tasting. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Lorie and Bruce Hurst hosted the event. We had Chardonnay with mac and cheese. Pinot Noir went with chocolate chip cookies. Dessert was apple crisp and cantaloupe with Cabernay Sauvignon. Everything was topped off with brownies made with Pinot Noir.

Need I say, I'm well satiated.

These wines were from HandCraft winery.  Excellent.  The recipes were good, too.

Something funny happened during the wine tasting.  Since we all had brought our own glasses to the event, I just brought an old one.  It happened to be from 2005, when I visited the Horton Vineyards, in VA.  Now, picture this.  Here we are enjoying our glasses of wine and I pick up my glass and read, There is evil in every berry of grape ~ Koran.

Ah....another good reason I'm glad I'm Catholic.

After a few more sips, I see that the other side of the glass has something else written on it.  One barrel of wine can work more miracles than a church full of saints ~Italian Proverb.

Maybe it was the wine, but like we say on Face Book:  ROFLOL!  Because you see, St. Mary's is an Italian parish.

Lost in the Translation

I like to read what's going on with the Dominican Sisters of Bethany.  The Mother House is in Europe, so the blog posts have to be translated.  Sometimes the translations make you laugh.  You just can't translate word for word.  The concept has to be grasped; then you'll get the idea.

Which reminded me of a scary translation.  My friend and favorite priest use to end his emails with:  "Come Jesu, anch'io ti amo fino a morire."

I couldn't make sense of the translation.  Father is an Italian missionary, so I asked an Italian in my parish.  He said, "I would love to see you dead, like Jesus."

WHAT!!!!

What is this?  Some kind of mafioso comment?

It couldn't be.  But it bothered me.  Why does Father want me dead?

Finally, I just confronted Father and asked him what it meant.  He wrote back:

"Like Jesus, I will love you to my death."

Beautiful.  Words can't truly express love.  No wonder the phrase couldn't be translated.

He loves like Jesus loves.  That's untranslatable.

Lost in the Translation

An Italian missionary priest that I correspond with, closes his letters with "Come Jesu, anch'io ti amo fino a morire."

When the opportunity arose, I asked Vinnie, who speaks Italian, what the closing said. Vinnie said, "I would love to see you dead, like Jesus!"

!!!!!!! What!

But that doesn't make sense. I tried Babel Fish and got, "Like Jesus, it is said, I would love to see you dead."

This was mixed up but sounded like Vinnie's translation.

Finally, I asked Father what his closing meant.

I will love you until my death, like Jesus loved us.

WOW How wonderful! What an awesome way to end a letter. I am blessed to have such a friend.

Human Dignity

It just dawned on me that God created me for Himself.  In Genesis 1: 1-31, we see God made everything for mankind.  I'm in awe to reali...
