Judicial Victory NOT a Cultural Victory

Although today the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the country remains divided on the issue of abortion.

I myself have been on one or two March for Life Marches, just as others have for almost half a century.  We have worked and prayed hard for our voiceless, most vulnerable little ones.  Now we need to be sensitive to those who don't think like us.  Building a culture of life is not the job of the government; it's we the people.  Now we need to pray and work hard for "life" at all stages--conception through natural death.  Let's get back to work.

The Babe Unborn

I thought this poem appropriate for the March for Life in Washington, DC.  I miss marching there.

 THE BABE UNBORN

by G. K. Chesterton
If trees were tall and grasses short,
As in some crazy tale,
If here and there a sea were blue
Beyond the breaking pale,
If a fixed fire hung in the air
To warm me one day through,
If deep green hair grew on great hills,
I know what I should do.
In dark I lie; dreaming that there
Are great eyes cold or kind,
And twisted streets and silent doors,
And living men behind.
Let storm clouds come: better an hour,
And leave to weep and fight,
Than all the ages I have ruled
The empires of the night.
I think that if they gave me leave
Within the world to stand,
I would be good through all the day
I spent in fairyland.
They should not hear a word from me
Of selfishness or scorn,
If only I could find the door,
If only I were born.

A Pro-Life Meditation

The homework for my Bible sharing group, this Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, includes reading Jeremiah 1: 4-5:

The word of the Lord came to me, saying:
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I dedicated you,
a prophet to the nations I appointed you.

Since the March for Life was only a few days ago, these verses stood out, for me: "in the womb, I knew you."  These words suggest so much more than God's choosing Jeremiah as a prophet.  It means that before Jeremiah was born, he was chosen.  Ponder "...I knew you."  Wowza!  God knows Jeremiah.  A relationship had begun.  God loved Jeremiah before he was even born.

And God feels the same for each one of us.

A Snow Altar

Many people who were involved in the March for Life got caught in the blizzard.  In fact, they're stranded on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.  While waiting to be rescued, the passengers made friends with each other.  The Green Bay bus and the bus from Missouri and others emptied out and found out that one of the groups had a priest.  So the kids made an altar out of snow, and the priest celebrated Mass.

I bet the singing was heartfelt!  Why doesn't mainstream media report wonderful news like this?

Media Manipulation

Back in the day, somewhere, sometime, I remember learning "Believe half of what you see; and none of what you hear."  I always believed that meant to half believe what I read, and don't believe any hearsay.

Recently, I've come to realize that when it comes to TV news, which is seeing and hearing, you shouldn't believe any thing.  The manipulation sometimes is so obvious.  In order to get a balanced view you need to watch at least a couple of news channels, or read different newspapers.  You can't just read the ones you agree with, or you'll soon notice your friends and relatives avoiding you.  You'll become narrow minded.

I've been to the same Town Council meetings that a newspaper reported has been and when I read what they wrote, you'd never know we were at the same meeting.  And it's not just different perspective, it's deliberately slanting what transpired to attract an audience.  That's manipulation.

For some reason, goodness isn't news.  Only the bad is reported.  If something good is ever reported it's given minimal space.  The last episode I was involved in was the March for Life, Jan 22, 2010.  It was the biggest yet.  It was hardly given any notice on TV.  Those that did mention it, said it was a small crowd.  Small!!! I couldn't find an empty seat in the Basilica.  I repeat, THE BASILICA!!!   It was also said that the crowd was small because the supporters were getting too old to walk and they were dying out.  Does the picture above look like old people?  This was my bus, and no I wasn't chaperoning a bunch of high schoolers, this was St. Brendan's parish bus.

The media for some reason doesn't report fairly.  It's owners or stock holders must have a set agenda and deliberately slant the news.  It's like the news in a communist country only reporting what the government says.  Only it's not the government, it's some other influential entity.  If you're involved in the pro-life fight you'd know what I'm saying is true.

Maybe because the news is a "product."  It has to sell.  So some things that are really no one's business are reported ad naseum: Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole Smith's baby, O.J. Simpson, etc..  See how the news is blown out of proportion?  The news is actually censored.  News like Dr. Bernard Nathanson, the famous pro-abortionist, changing to pro-life, Norma McCorvey - the famous Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, changing to pro-life, or people like Gianna Jessen who was aborted but survived, are fantastic, wonderful stories.  But they are deemed unpopular and don't get the attention they deserve.  The media is trying to manipulate us.

Sometimes, the media will tell the stories of the most extreme to influence you.  This is propaganda.  Then polls will be conducted with questions asked in such a way as to skewer the results.  These unfair results will be quoted to tell everyone what everyone thinks.

Don't fall for it.

March for Life

Join your fellow Catholics and pro-lifers from all over the country at the annual March for Life in our nation's capital on Friday January 22, 2010. For more information about this event, check out March for Life as well as the American Life League.

In addition to the gathering on the National Mall and the walk up Constitution Ave. to the Supreme Court building, the events include morning Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and a youth rally at the Verizon Center. Last year's speakers on the Mall included Congressmen Chris Smith from New Jersey who is the most outspoken pro-life congressmen in Washington, Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (visit the web site, Bobby Schindler, the brother of Terry Schiavo (visit the web site ) who died of starvation by a court order in 2005, and Judie Brown of the American Life League.

St. Mary's Parish in Franklin, MA is going to the March. Depending on the number of people from our parish, we will either provide transportation from St. Mary's or share a bus with St. Brendan's in Bellingham. We encourage adults as well as high school and college students to attend this special event.

To sign up for the march please contact Frank Fiorillo at 508-528-7930, or email at ffiorillo@verzion.net by January 6th so that we may plan for sufficient seats on the bus. Hope to see you there.
