NOT! the Answer to Who's this Guy?

The brainstorming continues.  Fr. Carlos Quijano, O.P. burst our bubble.  I'm referring to our conclusion to the mystery of "Who's this Guy?"   Fr. Carlos pointed out that it is unusual for a Pope to be depicted wearing the bishop's mitre; it's usually the tiara.  So my friend, Therese, did a little more investigating.

 Therese
The Padre is corect! I get to learn all about not jumping to conclusions without careful examination...(or what happens when you assume and all that!) The painting is by Lotto. It's in the town of Cigolo in Italy. Websites report that it either in the Dominican Monastery or the nearby Basilica of San Nicolo. The painting was completed in 1539 -- long before Pope Pius even took office. When I blew up the paining, it's obvious that the image on the back of his hood is NOT Our Lady of Guadeloupe. One art history website reports that the bishop figure is St. Esperance (the other main church in the town is St. Esperance) but that does not make sense. Another reports that it is St Vincent de Ferrer of Esperance. Wonder if he is just the local bishop and Lotto was flattering him?

Any other theories?
