Division: mother against daughter, father against son, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, etc. Today's Gospel (Luke 12: 49-53) is unpleasant to imagine. I don't like it. I imagine that in Jesus' time, the thought of this division was particularly hurtful. In Jesus' time one stayed in their family. Children grew up caring for parents. No one would deliberately separate one from his family.
Yet, it's natural, isn't it. People marry and move into different families. People may have employment opportunities far away from the family. Doesn't Jesus pull his apostles away from their families? Yes, a wife and children may have accompanied Jesus, but this insular group left their bigger clan to follow Jesus.
Yes, Jesus asked His followers to leave behind all earthly attachments and follow Him. He's asking us to do the same now. Don't become attached to people and certainly not to material things. You can't bring anyone or anything with you, when you die.
