Smoke from the Fire Pit

A sneaky ember in the brush.
Thirstily, a spark arises.

Glowing eyes, slitted small,
Searching stealthily.

What ancient serpent
Has been birthed;

Stalking, pursing, inside
The growing campfire?

Honing on my piteous body,
Following my evasive moves.

Seeking...

Seeking...

Seeking to attack
My blameless eyes.

Burning, irritating pain,
Stinging mercilessly, until

I admit defeat.

Why?

Why me?

Why does smoke
Seek me out?

My pitiful self
Retreats

Inside to wash
My wounded eyes.
