Statement of Interpretation

Estimated number of people in the world living...Image via Wikipedia
When a U.N. political declaration on AIDS/HIV passed unanimously last Friday, Jane Adolphe, speaking for Archbishop Francis Chullikatt said that the human person is better than the U.N. thinks he is.  The U.N. thinks that man acts on his "whims."  Jane Adolphe, an associate professor of law, said that man is more capable and has more dignity than the U.N. gives him credit for.  Abstinence is 100% effective.  Fidelity in marriage is 100% effective.  What other statistics do you need?

Today's culture is promiscuous.  And instead of working to change this irresponsible and dangerous behavior, the U.N. accepts it.  How low can we go?  Are human beings no better than dogs?

"Policies, programs and political statements are without meaning if we do not recognize the human dimension of this disease in the men, women and children who are living with and affected by HIV and AIDS," he said.
The archbishop promoted again "the only universally effective, safe and affordable means of halting the spread of the disease": abstinence, fidelity and the avoidance of irresponsible behaviors, as well as universal access to drugs that prevent the spread of HIV from mother-to-child.
And he decried those who ignore the positive results of abstinence- and fidelity-based programs in order to be "largely guided by ideology and the financial self interest which has grown as a result of the HIV disease."

Wearing the Rosary

Zenit, this morning had an article about wearing Rosaries.  Legionary of Christ Father Edward McNamara, professor of liturgy at the Regina Apostolorum University answers that it is appropriate to wear the Rosary as jewelry, if it's for the glory of God.  So my "cloistered brothers" who wear the rosary to show their faith would be OK, according to Father McNamara.  For me to wear the Rosary for devotional purposes is OK, too.  (I wear it to remind me to pray it.  If you see it on the outside of my clothing, I haven't prayed my Rosary, yet.  If my Rosary is worn under my clothing, then I've prayed.)
Of course, the Rosary Br. Vito made me for my habit, is of course, very appropriate.  Duh!

However, wearing the Rosary as fashion, is not.  Also bad, is wearing the Rosary as gang signature.  That I consider an abomination, unless you're part of Mary's gang. ;-)

Help Wanted

My name is Meghan Wenger and I am a rising Junior at
Boston College. I am currently working on a book project
and would greatly appreciate your parish's help and support.
Today, for every person who joins the Catholic
Church, four people leave. Young Catholics need examples
of how genuinely to live the Faith and reasons to do so. We
are looking for individuals to share personal stories/
reflections about the positive role the Catholic Church has
played in their life. How has Catholicism shaped the way
you view the world and how you live your life?
What advice would you would give to young Catholics? Why
should young Catholics stay in the Catholic Church? Please
focus on your personal experience and story. Please send
submissions (no more than 500 words) for this book project
to: catholicinspires@gmail.com. Thank you

What?

I just finished reading What is the What? by Dave Eggers.  I'm not writing a book review.  I just pulling out the story of "What?"  You see, when the main character was a boy in Southern Sudan, his father told him the story of God's creation.  After God created man and woman, instead of the woman choosing an apple or not, the choice was a cow, or...what?

After God created men and women, according to local legend, he gave them cattle, the source of “milk and meat and prosperity of every kind.” But God offered mankind a choice: “You can either have these cattle, as my gift to you, or you can have the What.”

What is the what?  Well, you don't know.  That's the point, because this time, unlike Eve, man chose correctly.  He chose the cow because the cow met all his needs: nourishment, and prosperity.

Happy Birthday Catholics!

If this were Facebook, and if it were your birthday, I'd honor you by sending you a link to a You Tube Video of the Three Stooges singing Happy Birthday.
But this a Church's birthday.  It's Pentecost, and this is when the Church began.  I've got to be serious:

You are cordially invited to a birthday party!

Vigil of Pentecost

Our important feasts, like Pentecost have vigil celebrations.  Prepare for celebrating Pentecost by reading and reflecting on the scriptures (Genesis 11:1-9, Exodus 19: 3-8a, 16-20b, Ezekiel 37: 1-14, Joel 3: 1-5, Romans 8: 22-27, John 7:37-39) for this feast.
